What you actually get

A new oleh family of four can expect roughly ₪80,000–₪120,000 in direct cash and tax benefits in year one, plus tens of thousands in waived customs, mortgage subsidies, and 10 years of tax-free foreign income. The list below mirrors the official Nefesh B'Nefesh page (last updated by NBN March 25, 2026).

Sal Klita (absorption basket)

Money

Cash deposited monthly into your Israeli bank for the first 6–7 months.

Paid by Misrad HaKlita. A lump sum lands within ~1–3 days of opening your account, then monthly installments. Amount depends on family size, age, and city. A single adult ~₪1,250/mo on top of the initial ~₪1,400 lump; family of 4 totals ~₪35,000+ over 6 months.

One-way coach-class ticket on a Nefesh B'Nefesh scheduled flight.

NBN coordinates group flights from NYC (JFK/Newark), Miami, Los Angeles, and flexible options from Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and Fort Lauderdale. Extra checked luggage is included. You must receive NBN flight approval before booking.

Housing

Monthly rent assistance from the Ministry of Housing, months 7–60.

Kicks in from your 7th or 8th month (depending on aliyah date) and runs up to 5 years. ~₪500–1,300/mo depending on family size and city zone (periphery cities pay more). Requires a registered lease.

Government-subsidized mortgage of up to ~₪300,000 at reduced interest.

Misrad HaShikun's oleh mortgage track. Tied to consumer price index but at well below market rates. Stacks on top of a regular bank mortgage. Available for 15 years from aliyah.

Housing

Reduced purchase-tax brackets when buying your first home in Israel.

Olim get one-time use of a special bracket — 0.5% on the first ~₪1.99M and 5% above (vs. up to 10% for Israelis on second properties). Usable once, within 7 years of aliyah (or 1 year before).

Housing

Up to 90% off municipal property tax for the first 12 months.

Standard: 90% discount on the first 100 m² for up to 12 months within the first 24 months of aliyah. Apply at your city's iriya office with your teudat oleh. Ktinim chozrim are not eligible.

Free health insurance — first 6 months

Health

Bituach Leumi covers basic kupat cholim membership while you have no income.

All four kupot (Maccabi, Clalit, Meuhedet, Leumit) accept new olim with no waiting period. Pick your fund at the airport or any post office. Former A-1 visa holders are NOT eligible.

Free Ulpan (Hebrew course)

Education

Up to 5 months of full-time intensive Hebrew, free, available across the country.

Ulpan Aleph (~500 hours) — residential options like Ulpan Etzion or community ulpanim. Vouchers valid up to 10 years after aliyah. Online ulpan options also covered.

University tuition benefit

Education

Heavily subsidized degree tuition for eligible young olim.

Student Authority (Minhal HaStudentim) covers up to a full BA's worth of tuition plus living stipend for olim aged ~16–27 (sometimes 35) at the time of aliyah. Mechina (prep year) often included.

Daycare subsidy

Family

Tuition reduction for recognized maons (0–3) and peutons.

Through Misrad HaKlita for the first 2 years post-aliyah. Stackable with the regular working-mother subsidy. Apply via maon-registered facilities.

Customs benefits — household goods tax-free

Other

Bring in your container of furniture, appliances, and personal items duty-free.

3 separate 'shipments' over 3 years from aliyah. Includes new appliances purchased abroad. Worth roughly $4,000–5,000 of waived duty on a typical lift. Use a customs agent who knows oleh paperwork.

Other

Reduced purchase tax on one new car bought in Israel or imported.

Roughly half the standard rate, capped — typically saves ₪15,000–40,000 depending on car. One-time use within 3 years of aliyah. Hybrids and EVs benefit less because base tax is already lower.

Israeli income-tax discount (nekudot zikui)

Tax

Extra credit points reduce your monthly tax bill for 3.5 years.

1 month before aliyah + 18 months = 3 points (~₪729/mo). Next 12 months = 2 points. Final 12 months = 1 point. Apply at your employer with form 101 and your teudat oleh.

Foreign-income tax exemption — 10 years

Tax

Pay zero Israeli tax on most non-Israeli income for the first decade.

Covers foreign salary, dividends, rental, pensions, capital gains. No requirement to report foreign assets for 10 years. Major benefit for olim with US/UK businesses, brokerage accounts, or rental properties abroad. Talk to a cross-border accountant before aliyah.

Bring cash up to ₪50,000 without reporting

Money

Carry cash or cash-equivalent up to ₪50,000 through customs without a declaration.

Above that, file form at the airport. Wire transfers above the threshold also need declaration. Standard FATCA/CRS rules still apply to your foreign accounts.

Not an official benefit — just reality

Citizenship on arrival

You walk off the plane as an Israeli citizen with a teudat oleh, issued at Ben Gurion within hours. Teudat zehut (ID card) follows within ~3 months at your local Misrad HaPnim. Right to vote, work, and healthcare from day one.

Fine print

  • · Every benefit has a time window — most expire 3, 5, 7, or 10 years from aliyah.
  • · You must claim them yourself; the government does not chase you to take them.
  • · Returning minors (ktinim chozrim) are excluded from arnona discount and several others.
  • · Former A-1 visa holders lose the free 6 months of Bituach Leumi.
  • · US citizens: the 10-year foreign-income tax exemption is Israel-side only — IRS still wants its forms.
